PARADOXICAL PLACES OF LA MIXTECA.Using an historical overview of the process of territorialization of the Mixtec community of San Juan Mixtepec in the Mexican State of Oaxaca, this article defies common perceptions of identity, community and territory. Aided by a methodology developed by the social studies of science, the social apparatus implied in the construction of places and territories as “a matter of fact” is reviewed and the process of place construction itself is seen as reproducing the social forms of inequality of a given time. Contrasting with the“naturalizing” constructions of place and territory, in this document I suggest that today’s Mixtecs share a complex perception of the concept of place which is at the same time “modern” and “traditional”. The “paradoxical places” that result from this perspective can be related to new ways of understanding identity as an “identity of becoming”.

COMMUNITY, SCHOOL AND “COMPADRAZGO” AMONG MIGRANT INDIANS IN THE CITY OF OAXACA.This article explores the tendential form in which migrant Indians in the city of Oaxaca seek to broaden their networks of reciprocity through secular “compadrazgo” relations, taking advantage of the opportunity presented by school graduations of their children at each level of their education, beginning with the earliest stage, that is, preschool.“Compadrazgo” is an institution fundamental to the construction of indigenous communities; this experience offers migrants the chance to ritualize relations of friendship, and in this way to build, in their own parameters, networks of support that create improved living conditions in the city.
LINGUISTIC ATTITUDES AND EDUCATIVE IDEOLOGIES.
Despite great efforts from the Mexican state in order to achieve that a formal education to the indigenous people take its place as a chief issue of the Mexican society, the results have turned out to be quite poor. The topic of linguistic ideologies from the particular point of discussion, offers the possibility of understanding the reason why great efforts and investments, related to the educative level among the indigenous population, should also consider this viewpoint. The following considerations belong to a research developed in the north and southern Zapoteca region as well as in the Triqui region of the state of Oaxaca (1994-1995) in a project called “Teaching practice and teachers attitudes towards the indigenous education”. This article concretely refers to the participants themselves linguistic ideologies expressed within diverse tendencies such as narrative judgements and arguments regarding the usage and functioning of languages (indigenous/ Spanish), since this is where social decisions are constructed and verified in order to either support or reject projects such as the intercultural bilingual education. This work embodies a conceptual journey between two disciplinary fields that offer some explanations about the phenomenon of linguistic ideologies: sociolinguistics and anthropology.
GASTROINTESTINAL DISEASE AMONG THE CHINANTECOS OF OAXACA: DENOTATIVE AND CONNOTATIVE ASPECTS OF THE ETHNOMEDICAL MODEL.
The Ojiteco ethnomedical classification system is complicated indeed. Around the gastrointestinal diseases, many disturbances are known according to the morphology, color and smell of feces, three nosological supracategories, six etiological groups, a clear differentiation between natural and supernatural distress and diverse degrees of severity. The explanatory model, however, does not necessarily guide the behavior of the social subjects within the search process of curative attention that begins at home. The disease experience does not correspond closely to the cognitive panorama of the latter. The intensive ethnographical investigations of the health-disease-attention process are essential in order to conceive these differences.
