Howell, Jayne.
HOUSEHOLD-MAIDS IN OAXACA: CONFLICTING LINKS, AFFECTIVE LINKS.Strained relationships between domestic servants (sirvientas) and female employers (patronas) are well reported throughout Latin America. Researchers stress that these conflicts arise from the economic exploitation inherent in relationships between women of distinct socioeconomic strata. This article explores causes of strain in relationships between sirvientas and patronas in Oaxaca City, a provincial capital in southeast Mexico, as well as factors that lead to more harmonious relations between these two classes of women. I argue here that positive relationships develop when patronas who themelves worked as sirvientas in order to finance their studies offer the same opportunities to their own employees.

A SOCIAL-ECONOMICAL COMPARISON AMONG SIX POPULAR NEIGHBORHOODS OF THE CITY OF OAXACA.The main purpose of this article is to make a socioeconomic analysis of households of six squatter settlements of Oaxaca City, a middle-size city that lacks an important industrial base. Squatter settlements, representative of up to 40% of the total population of Oaxaca City, are an option of securing low-cost housing for poor urban inhabitants. It was found that reduction in household size, as a strategy of adaptation to economic crises, is greater than in the average households of Oaxaca City. The participation of households in the labor market still is low and strongly orientated to the informal sector. Finally, formal education of the children represents the second priority in the family expenses.

Murphy, Arthur D., Mary Winter y Earl W. Morris. Etnicidad en Oaxaca de Juárez.
ETHNICITY IN OAXACA DE JUÁREZThis paper looks at the level of non-Spanish spoken by migrants to the City of Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico. Using data from a sample of households in the city we demonstrate that even though most household heads are migrants to the city, few speak a language other than Spanish. Nor do households participate in the types of “ethnic” or linguistically based organizations found in cities such as Los Angeles or Chicago. We conclude that when close to home identity is strongest with nation or home community. Social forces in the US cause migrants to shift their identity to a linguistic or ethnic group.
