Rodríguez López, Juan. Las carreras rarámuri y su contexto: una propuesta de interpretación
THE RARAMURI’S RACES AND ITS CONTEXT: AN INTERPRETATIVE PROPOSAL.This work applies some methodological principles and analytical concepts of Claude Lévi-Strauss, Edmund R. Leach and Umberto Eco to the raramuri’s races inquiry, keeping the author’s convergences and divergences with the structuralism implicit. In the first place, the history, qualities and ecological environment of the raramuri, an indian group of North Mexico as well known as tarahumar, are briefly introduced. Then social importance and functional richness of the batari (fermented corn drink) are analized in order to explain raramuri social relations essential features and races’ place in them. Finally, a semiotic interpretation proposal is put forth by linking simbolic social and material issues.

Carrasco, Tania. Los productores del campo en Oaxaca
THE RURAL PRODUCERS IN OAXACA.Oaxaca is the state in which most of the indigenous population dwell and it is the first state in regards to cultural diversity in all the country, followed by Veracruz, Chiapas and Yucatán. There are 3 million 228 thousand inhabitants in the state and 1 million speak fifteen different indigenous languages. Recent studies about the situation of indigenous people in this state show that 85% of the surface of it relates to indigenous people and even though the severe drop in the agriculture productivity, the repetitive debts within the indigenous peasants, etc. They represent the present and future of rural Oaxaca. The local government cannot ignore the importance that this fact implies to the economy of the entity and above all, the search of feasible alternatives should be supported by the communication with the indigenous producers and the recognition of their economical and cultural strategies, as well as a fair distribution of the resources.

Besserer, Federico. Lugares paradójicos de la Mixteca
PARADOXICAL PLACES OF LA MIXTECA.Using an historical overview of the process of territorialization of the Mixtec community of San Juan Mixtepec in the Mexican State of Oaxaca, this article defies common perceptions of identity, community and territory. Aided by a methodology developed by the social studies of science, the social apparatus implied in the construction of places and territories as “a matter of fact” is reviewed and the process of place construction itself is seen as reproducing the social forms of inequality of a given time. Contrasting with the“naturalizing” constructions of place and territory, in this document I suggest that today’s Mixtecs share a complex perception of the concept of place which is at the same time “modern” and “traditional”. The “paradoxical places” that result from this perspective can be related to new ways of understanding identity as an “identity of becoming”.

Chapela, Francisco. Emergencia de las organizaciones sociales de Oaxaca: la lucha por los recursos forestales
THE EMERGENCE OF SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS IN OAXACA: THE STRUGGLE FOR THE FOREST RESOURCES.There have been two main forestry approaches world-wide: State Forestry, where forest management is a public issue, and Private Forestry, where forests are a private asset to use under market laws. In the last 15 years, Oaxaca has witnessed the emergence of social organizations, both for production and technical support, that have been leading an intense change process in the sector, from State Forestry to a Community Forestry approach. Synergism between social organizations, leads traditionally marginalized communities through a development processes based on a privatized forest management and the socialization of economic benefits.
