Victor Franco Pellotier. Symbolism and orality.
This article presents the experience derived from the study of the marital ritual of the amuzgos from the Guerrero coast, a fact that leads into a consideration about the way the oral practice produces the symbolic effects which characterize the eventual ritual. The oral technics become the particular message of communication, that is to say, the marital ritual constitutes a message based on the particular form of the word.

Edmund R. Leach - El problema que estoy trabajando es, en términos muy generales, el siguiente. Gran parte del trabajo de los antropólogos sociales está relacionado con la interpretación de la conducta simbólica. Cuando hablamos de “estructura social” estamos traduciendo a nuestra propia jerga varios pedacitos y piezas de conducta culturalmente definidos, que nosotros elegimos considerar como “símbolos”. Esto es particularmente obvio en el caso de los rituales religiosos; las generalizaciones de Van Gennep sobre los Rites de Passage ofrecen un ejemplo clásico, pero incluso la ingenua teoría “asociacional” de la magia de Frazer asume que los antropólogos poseen una clase de llave dorada mediante la cual pueden afirmar de manera simple que una pieza particular de la conducta humana estereotipada “representa” o “es un símbolo de” esto, aquello o lo de más allá.
